Completion date Research description The analysis focused on those aged between 16-74 working in elementary cleaning occupations within England (excluding launderers, dry cleaners and pressers - SOC 9234) and covered the following aspects of the cleaning workforce: • Profile by industry • Profile by Sector Skills Council • Gender profile • Qualifications profile • Profile by hours worked • Profile by ethnicity • Profile by ward A more detailed set of tabulations was also prepared on size and characteristics of the cleaning workforce in England and within each English region, as part of this research project. These tabulations were prepared as a resource for Asset Skills, Regional Development Agencies, Learning and Skill Councils and other partners within the English regions who may wish to better understand the size and characteristics of their cleaning workforce. In addition to profiling the cleaning workforce, the Census 2001 data was used to examine the nature of any linkage between the residence of those employed in the cleaning industry and deprivation*. *This was achieved by undertaking a ward based analysis of deprivation and by comparing the extent of deprivation within each ward with the proportion of the economically active population employed in cleaning in every ward in England.
