Research description
The main purpose of this report was to set out the results of a comprehensive research programme which has sought to assess the current provision for skill needs in the Asset Skills sector, which covers the Housing, Property Services, Facilities Management and Cleaning sectors of the economy. The assessment of current provision for skill needs included the following:

• An overview of learning and skill development provision within the UK by nation/English region and industry, based on the outcomes of a detailed mapping exercise of all provision;

• A review of publicly funded expenditure on education and training in the Higher and Further Education sectors for learners within the Asset Skills footprint;

• Analysis of available data for students in further education (FE) courses within the Asset Skills industries across the four nations of the UK;

• Analysis of available data for students in work based learning (WBL) courses within the Asset Skills industries across the four nations of the UK;

• Information on the uptake and assessment of Higher Education (HE) data by country and industry;

• An overview of private sector training provision based on the results of a survey undertaken by the Asset Skills research team;

• An assessment of the quality of current provision using the outcomes of inspection reports and evaluations;

• An overview of employer attitudes towards training and skill development, primarily using the 2005 Asset Skills Employer Survey, which provides a UK wide perspective of all Asset Skills employers, together with each of the four Asset Skills industries. The 2004 SSDA Employer Survey and 2005 National Employer Skills Survey was also utilised where appropriate;

• Provision of a geographical perspective on skills and training related issues within the Asset Skills sector. Separate sections of analysis were set out in relation to England and the English Regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland;

• Analysis of what the providers of training, employers and professional bodies / associations consider to be the main issues in relation to the provision of training and skill development for each of the four Asset Skills industries; and

• Overall conclusions in relation to current provision for skill needs in the Asset Skills sector by industry.

This report drew on a series of more extensive 'data reports', which provided more in-depth analysis and information on different aspects of provision.
