Research description
The purpose of this research programme was to establish whether there were higher level skill gaps (defined as those skills needed by managers, supervisors and technical staff such as management skills or leadership skills) amongst passenger transport employees, with a view to understanding how they can be met.

Telephone surveys were conducted with:

• 159 Aviation establishments

• 214 scheduled transport (bus) establishments

• 132 Non-scheduled (coach) establishments

Issues covered in the survey included the nature of current and emerging skills gaps, methods of addressing skills gaps, factors considered when deciding upon higher level development programmes, barriers to training and preferred methods of training.

Research outputs from the project included the following:

. Report on the results of the survey in relation to each of the three different industries and their priorities and preferred options for development programmes;

. The survey results supplied in an SPSS data file;

. Listings of those companies taking part in the survey and their location.
